Ned the Neck wriggles this Saturday in Richmond

My new boa-constrictor-themed band piece, Ned the Neck, is being premiered this Saturday afternoon at the British Columbia Music Educators’ Association Forte 2011 Conference (October 20 – 22 in Richmond, BC.) The Honour Band final concert is at 4:30 pm, Saturday October 22, at Fraserview Church, 11295 Mellis Drive, Richmond, BC.

There’s a bit more info about the conference on the BC Creative Hub site, too.

A note about Ned: Ned the Neck is named after an albino boa constrictor – the piece is alternately relaxed and energetic, somewhat fierce, capricious, and rather fast and wriggly. Colour is very important (as it is on Ned – though he’s albino he has very lovely patterns that range between different shades of white, yellow and orange), and there is a constantly changing mosaic of different instrumental colours throughout this piece.

P.S. If you’re interested in purchasing the score and parts of Ned the Neck, it is now being sold by Long & McQuade. Please contact Greg Passmore to purchase.

Ned the Neck Lives!

My new band piece, Ned the Neck (yes that is a midi excerpt, listen at your peril, noting the nifty bari sax solo despite the heinous midi sound…) is done and being read by the BCMEA Honour Band tomorrow! Much excitement!!!

Ned the Neck (the snake) is a miniature boa constrictor, by the way. Ned the Neck (the band piece) is a co-commission by the BC CMC and the BCMEA, and was a lot of fun to write.
